Two important questions regarding the phrase: means of production. What means? And what is being produced? The answers to the first question are extremely varied. The answers to the second are also extremely varied, but can be hinted at with one word: difference. Those that control the means of production control the means by which difference is produced. And this control is used to extract value from differences and to produce differences that stabilize the status quo (from which value can and is also extracted). These differences divide those that don’t control the means of production (as intensely) and keep them from connection and solidarity. And we have gotten to a point where these constructed differences have been internalized to an extent that they are constantly re-produced by all of us. The solution is not to get rid of difference, since that would mean getting of everything. The solution is to produce different differences.
